What is NEET ?

NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.
It is India’s national-level entrance exam for admission to medical and dental courses.
NEET is conducted for admission to:
1. MBBS – Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery
2. BDS – Bachelor of Dental Surgery
3. BAMS – Ayurveda
4. BHMS – Homeopathy
5. BUMS – Unani Medicine
6. BSMS – Siddha
7. B.Sc. Nursing (in some institutes)
8. Veterinary courses (BVSc & AH)
Who conducts NEET?
- Conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency)
Who can apply?
Students who:
- Passed/appearing in Class 12
- With Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- Minimum age: 17 years
NEET Exam Pattern
- Single exam (offline, pen & paper)
- Subject-wise questions:
- Physics – 45
- Chemistry – 45
- Biology (Botany + Zoology) – 90
- Total questions: 180
- Total marks: 720
Why is NEET important?
It is the only exam for admission to medical colleges in India:

- JIPMER
- All government and private medical colleges

As long as you meet the age and qualification criteria, you can appear every year.
Eligibility Rules (Important)
1. Age Limit
- Minimum age: 17 years
- Maximum age: No upper age limit (removed by NMC in 2022)
2. Class 12 Subjects
You must have:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology/Biotechnology
- English (core or elective)
3. Minimum Marks in Class 12
- General: 50% in PCB
- OBC/SC/ST: 40% in PCB
- PwD: 45% in PCB
Qualifying Cut-off (Minimum needed to be “eligible”)
For NEET 2025, the minimum marks required to qualify (i.e. become eligible for counselling) were:

Marks Needed to Get MBBS Seat (Admission Cut-off) — Typical Ranges

Getting a seat — especially in a good (government) medical college — usually requires much higher marks. Based on recent trends:
- For General category (UR) and government MBBS seats — typically 600 to 650+ marks out of 720 — gives a good shot.
- For OBC / EWS categories — roughly 580 to 620+ marks may work.
- For SC / ST (or reserved categories) — around 500 to 550+ marks sometimes suffices (depending on state / seat pool / competition).
- For private or deemed universities (or lower-rank colleges) — seat cutoffs are lower; many candidates with ~400–550 marks might get in, especially under state quota or management quota
